Model Introduction
The Regal 4460 is a 2-stateroom, 2-head express cruiser with an open cockpit, raised bridgedeck and Volvo IPS propulsion. This is one of the largest models in Regal’s cruiser lineup, and was for a time the builder’s flagship. Both vee-drive inboard and Volvo IPS power are offered. Construction
The Regal 4460 starts off with a 30 mil. layer of epoxy barrier coat over the gelcoat on the bottom up to 3 in. above the waterline to prevent osmotic blistering. Resin rich chop follows, followed by a solid fiberglass layup. Coremat is used in the hull laminate to stiffen the hull sides.
The Regal 4460’s last layer of hull laminate is wet out in vinylester resin, which has excellent secondary bonding properties, followed by the end-grain balsa-panel stringers that are also encapsulated in vinylester for a good secondary bond between the hull skin and the hull support structure.
Plywood bulkheads are stood off from the hull skin to prevent hard spots, a fillet is applied to provide a radius for the fiberglass, and 2 layers of fiberglass tabbing are applied to each side of the bulkhead. Fiberglass-encapsulated plywood floors are set into an adhesive, bonding them to the hull stringers. Hull-to-deck joints are bonded with adhesive, and fastened with through-bolts for most of the length of the hull, and with self-tapping screws where nuts would be inaccessible.
