Model Introduction
The largest model in Cabo’s lineup, the Cabo 52 Express is a 2-stateroom, 2-head, 40-knot express sport fisherman designed for tournament fishing. It’s also a passable cruising yacht, though it lacks the convertible’s enclosed and climate-controlled upper-deck salon. The Cabo 52 Express has comfortable accommodations that are more than adequate for extended cruises for a couple and a few guests. Its low profile lowers the center of gravity, which makes the boat more seaworthy, and having the helm so close to the cockpit makes the boat easier to fish short handed. Construction
The Cabo is very well built, starting with a standard 25-mil. layer of gelcoat against the mold. The builder goes to great lengths to prevent blistering by using vinylester resin throughout the hull laminate. Vinylester resin is far more impervious to water migration at the molecular level, since it cross-links more completely, preventing osmosis. But the resin is also greatly superior to standard polyester resins used by most builders, since its elongation matches that of the fiberglass substrate. In a more brittle orthophthalic polyester resin, the resin will crack and fail before the fiberglass reinforcement is fully loaded, resulting in a relatively weak laminate. The vinylester layup is superior for these two reasons––osmosis resistance and strength––and is also a better glue, so secondary bonds are stronger.
